Lake Tent Camping

Fun for the Whole Family

A lake tent camping experience is perhaps the most enjoyable of all forms of camping.

Camping gives us an opportunity to be close to nature and can be a very special treat for children. They will treasure memories of a camping holiday for a long time.

This requires some detailed planning so that everything goes smoothly.

Campground Selection

For first-time campers, the best place for lake tent camping is a commercial campground. Details of these locations are available in the yellow pages, state park information brochures, or on the Internet.

They have the added attractions of showers, bathrooms, electric power hook-up facilities, and a water supply. Facilities for boating, fishing, hiking, and swimming are also available, making for a great getaway.

Your Camping Checklist

  1. Tents: Select a tent that is most suitable for your family size. The tent should not be too expensive and should provide protection from weather and insects.

It should be simple to rig up and dismantle. Ideally, some padding to sleep on makes it more comfortable. Alternately, you can use an air mattress. Do not forget to pack the pump along with it!

  2. Sleeping Bags: This will depend on the weather. Since most campers plan their lake tent camping vacations during summer or early fall, do not go in for a very heavy sleeping bag, which is more suitable for winter.

The light, rectangular variety is just fine. Sleeping bags can be zipped together if you want one of a larger size.

  3. Other Useful Items: Flashlights with extra batteries, matches, firewood (in case the campsite does not have access to it) or a cooking stove, first aid kit, drinking water, trash bags, cookware (not your best set!), sunscreen, and an insect repellent.

Cooking outdoors can be great fun and if you set up a barbecue with a portable grill, it is bound to be a huge success. Kids, especially, can get ravenously hungry when outdoors, so you would be well advised to plan accordingly!

A camping trip by the lake can be a memorable occasion for the entire family that will be treasured for many years to come. A bit of thoughtful planning will ensure that the trip goes off without a hitch.
